And she’s off…R’s First Kids Triathlon!

10 yo R completed the Zoot Westchester Kids Triathlon 2016 in Rye, NY this fall – I took some time to write the race report because, well, you’ll see. There was much to report! Enjoy. For as long as I can remember, R has been running away from me. Slap slap slap, the sound of her sneakers and laughter floating on the breeze. The imprint on my body from the most recent vigorous hug a reminder that as much as R was here a minute ago, now she’s off. Seeing what’s around the bend. R sometimes gets held up at the start of new things. She was afraid to go into the swimming pool at first. She took several early spills off her bike followed by swearing she was quitting forever. But once she gets going, she keeps going. Never mind that she’s five years younger than her big sister G; R would set her sights on catching up to her at full speed. “I want to do a kids’ triathlon!” she declared after watching me finish the Westchester Olympic Distance Triathlon last year. “We have a lot to be thankful for,” my husband said last night. I was lying in bed at 9:30 pm, the night before Thanksgiving, depleted and sad. “I know,’ I said. “But it doesn’t feel like enough, that WE’RE ok…for now.” It’s like having a Pre-Trauma-Stress-Disorder. The violence and stripping away of rights are coming, we can feel it in our bones.

Tell me if you do this: * You begin a project with great gusto. But before long, you’re getting a snack, sweeping the porch, checking Facebook, dreaming of other projects, because you need a break. * You go to yoga class, or treat yourself to a massage. Excited for the time off, you lie down and close your eyes, and…start making lists. Forgot to do this, must do that, how much longer here? Because you need to get things done. I do, too! And so do many of the women I coach. It seems silly – why can’t we work when we’re supposed to work and rest when we’re supposed to rest? Instead, we’re looking for the emergency exit, thereby making it harder to achieve our goals and creating stress rather than reducing it. Why do we do such self-defeating things? As a fear-facing expert, I believe it’s mostly because of fear. Remembering 9/11 with the Tunnel2Towers 5K

Today marks 15 years since the collapse of the World Trade Towers and the beginning of the War on Terror. I can’t think of an event that captures the enormity of the loss and the bravery of first responders like the annual Tunnel2Towers 5K Run & Walk, that retraces the steps of firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel wearing 60 lbs of gear to get to the World Trade Center where he died when the South Tower fell. Team #SomeNerve participated in 2014, along with 25,000 firemen, police, armed forces, and their families and supporters (see post below). I hope you’ll consider joining the event (this year on September 25, 2016) or donating to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. There is nothing more humbling and ultimately life affirming than seeing so many brave men and women who are willing to die to protect us. It calls us all to live as fully and as courageously as we can.
