10 yo R completed the Zoot Westchester Kids Triathlon 2016 in Rye, NY this fall – I took some time to write the race report because, well, you’ll see. There was much to report! Enjoy. For as long as I can remember, R has been running away from me. Slap slap slap, the sound of her sneakers and laughter floating on the breeze. The imprint on my body from the most recent vigorous hug a reminder that as much as R was here a minute ago, now she’s off. Seeing what’s around the bend. R sometimes gets held up at the start of new things. She was afraid to go into the swimming pool at first. She took several early spills off her bike followed by swearing she was quitting forever. But once she gets going, she keeps going. Never mind that she’s five years younger than her big sister G; R would set her sights on catching up to her at full speed. “I want to do a kids’ triathlon!” she declared after watching me finish the Westchester Olympic Distance Triathlon last year. Well, that was unexpected! I thought the Sleepy Hollow Sprint Triathlon would be straightforward: I’d swim a half mile in the Hudson River (yes, that sounds a bit crazy -triathletes are totally mental!) and then Kent would ride like the wind while I rested and cheered for Team #SomeNerve, and then I’d walk our daughter G through her first 5K as anchor to our Anker Family Relay. After doing the Westchester Olympic Triathlon at double the distance on my own last year I thought this wouldn’t be too bad. No drama, I told myself as I waited in my gold cap with the last wave of swimmers to enter. Get ‘er done. Ha! I should have known triathlons are anything but straightforward! After a promising start – the skies were clear, the water looked flat, my anxiety (ever since I almost drowned on a river as a teen I’ve had a hate-hate relationship with rivers) was under control with my Team in Training Swim Angel alongside, I was going my slow and steady pace hoping to not fall too far behind – something unprecedented happened. When the weather report for the 42-mile TD Five Boro Bike Tour 2016 said “a total washout – rain all day and temperatures in the 40s” I was not happy. I have somehow, through training for 3 5-Boros and 3 triathlons since learning to bike 2 years ago with Bike New York Adult Beginner classes, managed to avoid cycling long distances in the rain. The thought of biking on wet and slippery roads while getting hypothermia made me want to fake a fever and call the whole thing off. But the 5 Boro is RAIN OR SHINE, my team is called Team #SomeNerve (WHY? WHY didn’t I call it Team #SOMEFAIRWEATHERNERVE?), and despite some cancellations a great number of BRAVE teammates checked in to say “I’M STILL IN!” So I went to work figuring out how best to weather the weather. I queried experts at Red Beard Bikes, Liv Cycling, Hastings Velo, and the fine athletes at the Women for Tri Facebook Group. Our hard earned advice: * Dress appropriately – Anti fog sunglasses and/or a visor under your helmet. WATERPROOF gloves, rain jacket, rain pants.
