Why travel solo?  Read “Party of One: Thoughts on Solo Travel” my blog post at “Nuts about Southwest” the Southwest Airlines blog, and then go book your ticket! “I don’t think I fully appreciated the joys of traveling on my own until one early morning in Costa Rica when I realized, I just ate cookies before breakfast. Me, a responsible wife, mom, and exhorter of nutritional standards, had just eaten packaged cookies at 6 a.m. and asked for more. What got into me? I had been nervous before leaving for my trip; I wasn’t used to going away without my family. I was to fly alone, then join a Costa Rica Expeditions tour group. Though glad to have the rest of the week planned for me, I was anxious about spending it with strangers. Little did I know it would turn out to be the experience of a lifetime. In the event you have a solo trip coming up or are trying to build up the courage to book one, here is a list of benefits I discovered to traveling alone:” – Read the rest at: http://www.blogsouthwest.com/party-of-one-thoughts-on-solo-travel/   Share: Facebook Twitter Pinterest Linkedin Google+...

I’ll be there Friday, November 15 at 7 pm to read and sign copies of Some Nerve. I wonder if anyone would mind if I hung out til he gets there the 22nd? Redbook Magazine “How One Mom Used Blogging to Bust Out of Her Comfort Zone” online Q &A

“Many of our readers would love to try blogging,”  Redbook Magazine Web Editor Lauren Le Vine told me the day of our interview. “But it can be daunting to start.” I smiled at the thought of how scared I was the night (the very late night) when I launched Facing Forty Upside Down four years ago. I picked a URL no one would be able to find (http://www.upside-down-patty.blogspot.com). Two hyphens? Who does that?  Someone with a massive fear of failure, that’s who! So it was a pleasure to answer Lauren’s great questions – about fear of taking risks, overcoming what felt like an ingrained fear of failure, how blogging puts you in charge of your story (and therefore, your life) – and more fun tidbits in this Q & A: “How One Mom Used Blogging to Bust Out of Her Comfort Zone” Hope you enjoy, and if you start a blog, pick a really easy URL to find.   In the days following pubdate my  Facebook timeline filled with joyful pictures of Some Nerve arriving in your homes. All those nights I wrote, worrying about finishing, I held on to the image of the book on your nightstand one day. This is every one of those dreams (and many more I never envisioned) come true. I’m posting just a few here, although I know I haven’t captured all, every one you sent me means so much. Thank you.       Share: Facebook Twitter Pinterest Linkedin Google+...

“Life Stories” podcast with Ron Hogan, “Conversations with Jeff Schechtman” – for this book publicist-turned-author, it’s pure fun

Recently I had the pleasure of recording two very special interviews with friends from long ago:  Ron Hogan‘s “Life Stories” podcast and Jeff Schechtman‘s “Conversations” show on KVON in Napa, CA. I have always loved listening to authors speak on the radio – there’s something deeply satisfying about hearing their stories in their own voices, what they were thinking when they were writing, what they have learned since. Like having an intimate conversation, if I weren’t starstruck and tongue-tied and could actually ask good questions if I ever met them.  That’s why it’s so important to have good hosts, who can turn a potentially nerve-wracking experience for a first time author (“is this thing on? Oh, @#%! Sorry. What did you say?”) into something fun, inspiring and revealing (in just the right amount). I know both Ron and Jeff from my days as a book publicist, and they have always been among authors’ favorite interviewers.  They love books. Like, really love them. Put it this way – I might say that I love chocolate, but if I were to be surrounded by chocolate and allowed to eat it free range every day of my life, I might get tired of it. That’s not the love we’re talking about. When I first...
